The inverse problem: Ocean tides derived from earth tide observations
Indirect mapping ocean tides by means of land and island-based tidal gravity measurements is presented. The inverse scheme of linear programming is used for indirect mapping of ocean tides. Open ocean tides were measured by the numerical integration of Laplace's tidal equations

Distance-two labelings of digraphs
For positive integers , an -labeling of a digraph is a
function from into the set of nonnegative integers such that
if is adjacent to in and if
is of distant two to in . Elements of the image of are called
labels. The -labeling problem is to determine the
-number of a digraph , which
is the minimum of the maximum label used in an -labeling of . This
paper studies - numbers of digraphs. In particular, we
determine - numbers of digraphs whose longest dipath is of
length at most 2, and -numbers of ditrees having dipaths
of length 4. We also give bounds for -numbers of bipartite
digraphs whose longest dipath is of length 3. Finally, we present a linear-time
algorithm for determining -numbers of ditrees whose
longest dipath is of length 3.Comment: 12 pages; presented in SIAM Coference on Discrete Mathematics, June

Microscopic Restoration of Proton-Neutron Mixed Symmetry in Weakly Collective Nuclei
Starting from the microscopic low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction V{low
k}, we present the first systematic shell model study of magnetic moments and
magnetic dipole transition strengths of the basic low-energy one-quadrupole
phonon excitations in nearly-spherical nuclei. Studying in particular the
even-even N=52 isotones from 92Zr to 100Cd, we find the predicted evolution of
the predominantly proton-neutron non-symmetric state reveals a restoration of
collective proton-neutron mixed-symmetry structure near mid-shell. This
provides the first explanation for the existence of pronounced collective
mixed-symmetry structures in weakly-collective nuclei.Comment: 5 Pages, 3 figure
The Megamaser Cosmology Project. V. An Angular Diameter Distance to NGC 6264 at 140 Mpc
We present the direct measurement of the Hubble constant, yielding the direct
measurement of the angular-diameter distance to NGC 6264 using the HO
megamaser technique. Our measurement is based on sensitive observations of the
circumnuclear megamaser disk from four observations with the Very Long Baseline
Array, the Green Bank Telescope and the Effelsberg Telescope. We also monitored
the maser spectral profile for 2.3 years using the Green Bank Telescope to
measure accelerations of maser lines by tracking their line-of-sight velocities
as they change with time. The measured accelerations suggest that the systemic
maser spots have a significantly wider radial distribution than in the
archetypal megamaser in NGC 4258. We model the maser emission as arising from a
circumnuclear disk with orbits dominated by the central black hole. The best
fit of the data gives a Hubble constant of 689 km s
Mpc, which corresponds to an angular-diameter distance of 14419
Mpc. In addition, the fit also gives a mass of the central black hole of
(3.090.42) . The result demonstrates the
feasibility of measuring distances to galaxies located well into the Hubble
flow by using circumnuclear megamaser disks.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by Ap
Stem-root flow effect on soil–atmosphere interactions and uncertainty assessments
Abstract. Soil water can rapidly enter deeper layers via vertical redistribution of soil water through the stem–root flow mechanism. This study develops the stem–root flow parameterization scheme and coupled this scheme with the Simplified Simple Biosphere model (SSiB) to analyze its effects on land–atmospheric interactions. The SSiB model was tested in a single column mode using the Lien Hua Chih (LHC) measurements conducted in Taiwan and HAPEX-Mobilhy (HAPEX) measurements in France. The results show that stem–root flow generally caused a decrease in the moisture content at the top soil layer and moistened the deeper soil layers. Such soil moisture redistribution results in significant changes in heat flux exchange between land and atmosphere. In the humid environment at LHC, the stem–root flow effect on transpiration was minimal, and the main influence on energy flux was through reduced soil evaporation that led to higher soil temperature and greater sensible heat flux. In the Mediterranean environment of HAPEX, the stem–root flow significantly affected plant transpiration and soil evaporation, as well as associated changes in canopy and soil temperatures. However, the effect on transpiration could either be positive or negative depending on the relative changes in the moisture content of the top soil vs. deeper soil layers due to stem–root flow and soil moisture diffusion processes
A 0.8 V T Network-Based 2.6 GHz Downconverter RFIC
A 2.6 GHz downconverter RFIC is designed and implemented using a 0.18 μm CMOS standard process. An important goal of the design is to achieve the high linearity that is required in WiMAX systems with a low supply voltage. A passive T phase-shift network is used as an RF input stage in a Gilbert cell to reduce supply voltage. A single supply voltage of 0.8 V is used with a power consumption of 5.87 mW. The T network-based downconverter achieves a conversion gain (CG) of 5 dB, a single-sideband noise figure (NF) of 16.16 dB, an RF-to-IF isolation of greater than 20 dB, and an input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of 1 dBm when the LO power of -13 dBm is applied
Mechanism of formation of half-doped stripes in underdoped cuprates
Using a variational Monte-Carlo approach with a recently proposed stripe wave
function, we showed that the strong correlation included in a t-J-type model
has essentially all the necessary ingredients to form these stripes with
modulations of charge density, spin magnetization, and pair field. If a
perturbative effect of electron-phonon coupling to renormalize the effective
mass or the hopping rate of holes is considered with the model, we find the
half-doped stripes, which has on the average one half of a hole in one period
of charge modulation, to be most stable, energetic wise in the underdoped
region, . This is in good agreement with the observation
in the neutron scattering experiments. We also find long range Coulomb
interaction to be less effective in the formation of half-doped stripes.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Cryogenic combustion laboratory
The objective is to establish a major experimental laboratory for studying fundamental processes such as mixing and combustion under liquid rocket engine conditions. The capability of this laboratory will include operation using a variety of fuel and oxidizer systems including liquid oxygen and liquid hydrocarbons. In addition to providing the proper facilities for supplying and controlling these fuels and oxidizers, a specific effort is being made to provide a state-of-the-art diagnostic capability for combustion measurements. In particular, optical and laser-based techniques are being emphasized for measurements of species, velocities, and spray characteristics
